Karval Erosion Control Workshop huge success

Posted

A Different Type of Rock-n-Roll

Twenty-five eager participants braved the cold to participate in a hands on-workshop October 30 and 31, 2024 on the Wineinger-Davis Ranch in Karval, Colorado.

Participants learned how to build rock erosion control structures through hands-on instruction. They also learned how to read the landscape to better understand surface water flow and the erosion process with Aaron Kauffman of Southwest Urban Hydrology. The structures slow down water runoff and spread it out providing high quality forage for landowners in arid systems across Colorado. These rock structures are designed for small, dry creek beds, livestock trails, and other water conveyance channels that provide water infiltration during and after flash precipitation events.

The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies along with USDA NRCS, USFWS Partners, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife hosted the workshop which was sponsored by NextEra Energy. Fremont Conservation District loaned their hand tools for the workshop.
