VERNON HAROLD NALL

April 03, 2024

Vernon Harold Nall, the beloved son of L.E. and Vera Nall, was born on January 22, 1934, in Limon, Colorado. He peacefully passed away on March 6, 2024, in Gilbert, Arizona, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 70+ years.

Vernon’s early education began at a country school south of Limon before he moved to town for further schooling. He proudly graduated from Limon High School in 1952, excelling in and loving the sport of basketball.  After graduation, Vern attended Barnes Business School in Denver for a year but soon realized his passion lay elsewhere. He returned home briefly before enlisting in the Army, eager to serve his country.

On September 13, 1953, Vern married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Covington. Their enduring love was celebrated joyfully as they marked their 70th wedding anniversary in September 2023.

Beginning in April 1954, Vern served in the Army and underwent training at Fort Ord, California. He later received specialized training in high-speed radio at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA, and was selected for the Army Security Agency. Lorraine joined him in Georgia before he was stationed in Kassel, Germany, for 14 months.

After his honorable discharge from the Army in April 1956, Vern returned to Limon and joined his father in the Ford garage business, selling cars and repairing radiators. He later worked for the postal service, initially on a rural route south of Limon and then at the town’s post office, where he became a familiar face to local children eager for a stamped hand. Vern and Lorraine managed the Tamarack Country Club restaurant from 1977 to 1979. Vern also worked at Tucker Chevrolet during this time. Vern retired on April 30, 1995, after 38 dedicated years of service with the postal service.

Following retirement, Vern and Lorraine spent several years as snowbirds at Caliente in Florence, AZ, before making it their permanent home. Vern’s warm and welcoming nature endeared him to all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by many.

Vern had a passion for sports. He was an avid bowler and played town team basketball for several years before dedicating himself to golf. You could find him on the golf course whenever he had free time, enjoying the game he loved.  Active in his community, Vern held various roles in the Lion’s Club, served on the Limon Town Council, and was Assistant Fire Chief, demonstrating his commitment to service and community betterment.

Vern was a loving father to his four children, Alvin (Danna) of Casa Grande, AZ, Susan Holladay (Jim) of Thornton, CO, Scott (Caryn) of Chandler, AZ, and Max (Dan) of Westminster, CO. He was also a cherished grandfather to his 13 grandchildren: Chad, Skyler (Jacqie), Tyler, Cy Holladay (Lynn), Darcy Ford (David), Trisha Mendez, Haley McNutt (Mason), Tate (Kaleigh), Dylan, Trey, Devyn, Daniel, and Emmy Gutierrez (Julian). Additionally, he was a proud great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Doreen Foncannon (Floyd) of Limon, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Sam Sr. and Lavinia Covington, and his brother Duane and many loved family members.

Cards can be sent to Lorraine Nall, 590 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ 85296.

The family is hosting a “Cheers to Vern” celebration on Saturday, April 6 from 2:00-3:30 PM at Sunrise of Gilbert, 590 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ 85296.
