Louis Wezel and Maxine Harris met during high school. After graduation, Louis decided to pop the question, and Maxine said yes. On February 14th, they went to buy the rings for their wonderful day, which was to be September 21st, 1935. Come to find out, they just couldn’t wait and changed the date to June 21st, 1955.
Having a shorter time frame, there was not enough time to save for the wedding dress of Maxine’s dreams. Louis had an idea… the pig. Louis had a pet pig that was as big around as it was long. There was not a second thought. He sold the pig …the dream dress was bought.
The community got together to make the wedding day beautiful. Money was tight so everything was made or borrowed. The flowers were from all the flower beds in the community gardens. True love began that day.
The couple would welcome to this world six beautiful children. The oldest, God called back to himself at a young age. They would live on the family farm that had been established in 1891.
They taught their children what it was to have true love for family. You would see this couple holding hands, giving hugs, looking dreamily into each other’s eyes, and always saying, “I love you”. They never spent more than 18 hours apart. Even after 68 years of marriage, nothing changed. They continued to show each other love every day. They were attached at the hip.
Since they have been one unit since June 21st, 1955, that is how they chose to go to the good Lord. Louis passed away on March 20th, 2024, and Maxine passed away on April 3rd, 2024. They will always be together… in death as they were in life – True LOVE.
